My Style: Mansfield Garden Picnic

Amy and I attended the Hamilton Gardens ” Mansfield Picnic” last month. This provided a great opportunity to style an outfit influenced by the Deco era! In this instance I selected a great tropical vintage maxi dress, pairing it with a classic straw boater hat. I styled my hair into a some classic 30’s waves and framed my face with large, flat pin-curls.

My makeup was 30’s inspired and I decided to go for the natural flushed look. Placing emphasis on my cheeks, rounding my brows in 30’s style and a rose soft lip. A nice soft look that translates well in modern day.

We were fortunate to run into our friend David Rowe who then invited us into the Italian gardens for a photo shoot.

19 Black Grand Opening

Its been a busy couple of months for The Sweet Painted Lady and I thought it would be great to share some of the events I have been attending.

NZ Pinup Model Sweet Painted Lady

In September I was invited to do hair and makeup at the grand opening of 19 Black Modern Pinup Boutique . 19 Black  has recently opened up on Hamilton Grey Street and is a welcoming go to for the local pinup ladies! Run by Judy, it stocks plenty of pinup goodies to treat yourself from head to toe!

Judy invited Miss Pinup NZ 2015 Bettie Rage and I to the day and it was great to see so many of the pinup scene including Glory Days Magazine and the Classics Museum along to show their support!

This gorgeous lady Tracey, had never worn makeup or had her hair down, so I gave her a “Pinup Makeover” and  she brought a complete outfit. The look on her face when she looked in the mirror really made my day. I’m very fortunate to meet lots of lovely ladies ( and Men ) in my job.

In Our Neighbourhood : Duck Island Ice Cream

Its pouring down with rain and bitterly cold so what perfect weather for ice cream!  Normally I would turn it down as I don’t have much of a sweet tooth but on hearing all the raving reviews about Hamilton’s new ice-cream parlor I couldn’t resist! The family decided to have a little date with friends Brigette and Belle so we could all catch up and sample the goods.

Duck Island Ice Cream

A certain little man was very excited about the prospect of Ice -cream, it was quiet busy and we had to wait about 15 mins for a table to become available.

The shop is very well equipped for children, providing chairs and tables for them, toys to keep them entertained and some simple ice cream options.

Now the the important stuff! Ice Cream! All of Duck Islands ice cream is produced on site with beautiful ingredients. As a result its a little more expensive than a usual ice cream but completely worth it! The ice cream is smooth, lovely and the variety of amazing flavours is fantastic! I had the Salted Caramel and popcorn sundae and hubby had a peanut butter, choc ,cashew and black sesame seed sundae. Both were delicious with no overwhelming flavours.

Really cant wait to have this again! I also tried the Bourbon and Brown Sugar flavour which was delicious!

You can check out Duck Island on facebook and find them on the corner of Grey and Cook Street beside Steele Park in Hamilton.

Mansfield Garden Party

Last weekend the first annual Manfield Garden Party was held at Hamilton Gardens so the girls and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to dress Deco style and picnic in the rose gardens. After 3 weeks of no rain the heavens decided to open but this didn’t dampen the spirits of attendees and planned entertainment went ahead as planned.

We off course sipped wine from teacups and nibbled on treats while seated on my favourite vintage blanket.

The Mansfield Garden Party showcased a deco fashion show put together, styled and mc’d by Michelle of Debonaire Do’s.

Wai Kat swing put on a lovely swing dance demonstration, readings of Katherine Mansfield short story’s including ” The Garden Party” , live music and a vintage car display.

We were very lucky to have a few snaps with the lovely David who joined us for tea which of course meant hamming it up and having a giggle…poor David!

I’m really looking forward to next years even with some a few lovely outfit ideas already swimming around in my head. This years look was inspired by 30’s beach pajamas as my 30’s vintage is all winter weight!  The wide legged pants are from Glassons and the sailor top was a trademe find.Look out for Amy’s Mansfield post coming soon over on her blog Chica Chica Boom Chic.

In Our Neighbourhood : Grey Gardens Cafe

Nestled down a driveway off Grey Street its easy to see why Grey Gardens Cafe could easily be missed by the local wanderer. In fact if I hadn’t of glanced down at the right moment I would off missed their lovely sign perched on the ground, made the link to the Grey Grey Gardens movie nor spotted their pair of retro umbrellas brightening up the otherwise bland surroundings.

Wander past the mechanics and small business’s and you will discover a lovely and quietly humming cafe. Inside you will find an airy, family friendly space filled with vintage curiosity’s displayed in simply through out, some are available to purchase. Music plays quietly on a record player and there is a relaxed vibe to the space. Good coffee and NZ products are on offer and I found it refreshing that there wasn’t a cabinet crammed full of muffins, flat breads  etc, instead there is a few items to tickle your taste buds. I recommend the iced coffee which is served Affogato style in a tall glass and the delicious espresso shot, custard, chocolatty, donutty goodness they had on offer………..ah yum!

You can find the lovely Grey Gardens at Shed 6  .  394 Grey Street  .  Hamilton East

Girls about town – Humidity proof hair!

This week my roster and Amy of Chica Chica Boom Chic aligned so we did our hair , frocked up and hit the shops for a girls day out! We have both been complaining that the humidity was dragging us  ( and our hair ) down so we made some extra effort to sparkle and enjoy ourselves!

Sweet Painted Lady hair 2 Day Curling wand

Despite the humidity Amy managed to get her hair glossy and extra curly with the H2D Curling Wand,  deciding to mix it up with the large barrel connection ( one of five to choose from ) to achieve lovely big curls that she then brushed out into Veronica Lake style waves – Va Voom!

Sweet Painted lady Hair 2 Day pormo

I decided to use the tapered wand connection as my hair is still at the shorter stage so it helps me to achieve add volume and thickness. I love that it only takes 5-10 seconds to curl on the barrel ( no clip here )  so its great for quickly getting ready and achieves long lasting glossy results!

Starting off with a much needed coffee and a light lunch before hitting some of our favourite thrift stores in Hamilton!

Chica Chica Boom Chic Daily Outfit

Christmas is in full swing in the local Westfield so we decided to make use of Santa’s amazing grotto set up ( and air conditioning ) and grab a few outfit pics! Amy’s hair withstood the faux snow sprinkling down on us!

We had such a great day out with lots of lovely compliments ( helps a girl sparkle! ) After 6 hours our hair was still looking as fresh as it did in the morning thanks to the H2D curling wand and its long lasting results! I have replaced my current kit wand and rollers in favour of the 5 wands and the variety of effects they create!
